Environment

Severstal North America is committed to environmental quality and to good corporate citizenship.  This commitment is reflected in our environmental policy, our key values and our initiatives.

Severstal Dearborn was one of the first integrated steel facilities to have its Environmental Management System certified to the international standard, ISO 14001, and we are presently certified to the most current version of the standard, ISO 14001:2004.  Our Environmental Management System permits us to methodically monitor our environmental performance and provides for its continuous improvement.

Recycling and reuse of resources is integral to our daily operations.  One-third of the by-product gas from our iron-producing blast furnaces is burned to preheat the air used by those blast furnaces.  The remaining two-thirds of the blast furnace gas is supplied to a nearby power plant to generate steam and electricity.  We re-use millions of gallons of cooling water discharged by that power plant to cool our equipment and process our steel.  Slag from our production processes is re-used as a raw material in the blast furnaces or sold for use in paving roads and concrete products.  Employee teams are working to improve utilization of energy and material resources.  One such team reduced natural gas consumption in the Hot Strip Mill by 11% through hot charging of slabs.

Steel is the most recycled material produced in North America.  According to the Steel Recycling Institute, more steel is recycled each year than aluminum, paper, glass and plastic combined.  SNA recycles steel scrap generated by our customers, reducing the amount of energy required to produce our steel. Each ton of steel that Severstal North America produces is comprised of approximately 27% recycled steel.

Our customers and our community depend on us to make quality steel in an environmentally sound manner.  We are proud of what we do.
